Biting WindGentle Stroll |
Cold FingersFor these photos, I chose to go to the Barton dam because it is a place that I often hang out at during the summer (and sometimes during the other seasons). My family will take long strolls to watch the sunset during the summer and we'll stop at the dock right before the dam, and we'll unwind. However, in the winter, my favorite thing about Barton dam and the surrounding areas is how the lake will freeze over and you can walk safely on it. People will go out onto the ice to play hockey, ice skate, or simply take a stroll. It's really nice how people will still find a way and a place to bond even when its super cold outside. I also like how everything is quieter during the winter, even though the wind chills me to the bone. The various shots and angles that I took my photos from are meant to represent the different locations on a stroll that I often take where you have a clear view of the dam.

The CongregationThis is possibly one of Ann Arbor's most famous places for people to see. Everyone knows the "Graffiti Alley". It's a place where teens go to hang out, and the occasional shady person will go to hang out with their friends. When I went there was a mini Christmas tree in the corner. This feels like a place with a lot of character where many people have bonded. All of the graffiti is an accumulation of many artists, each one saying something, and together they make art through conversation. I think that's super dope. For the composition of the image, for two of them, I tried to line up the sides of the image with the almost pinpoint perspective that the alley has. For the third one (pictured on the right) I tried to capture all of the clashing building elevations while still maintaining a sense of balance in the image which is provided by the tall vertical lines of the buildings cutting through the image. I know that there are some people who haven't been here yet, or maybe haven't heard of it, but I think that places like this where artist come together to make something larger is something that everyone should be able to experience.

Led ToThis is a U of m building. I chose this building because the pathway and the architectural style of the door reminded me of a place we stayed when we went to visit Italy. Aside from that, I'm not actually sure what this building is for. I tried to make sure that the composition for the blueprint was clear on what the focus of the image was by using the sidewalk edges as leading lines to get to the door. The building itself is actually quite average looking at first glance, but upon closer inspection you can see some of the more intricate detailing along the edges of the building. I also like the vines a lot. That's something that I've always liked a lot on buildings, I find that it adds charm.

DiscoveryThis is a Jewish house of worship that is located downtown, sandwiched between a cookie shop and a ramen bar. With the composition of the three photos combined, when I was taking the photos I noticed that to the left of the building there was a dark alley that I couldn't see into because of the stone wall surrounding the building. To the right was all the buildings that I knew about and had been to before. That's how the names of the photos came to be. I had to take these photos through a locked gate much to my annoyance, however it was rewarding to see the very nice contrast in the blueprint of all of the bricks.

Moving InFamily House |
Moving OutThis is a house in a neighborhood not too far from mine. I used to know the people that lived in this house. It was a sweet old couple, and I remember on one occasion that I talked to them at a neighborhood potluck they told me about the stuff they did when they were younger and they told me about their kids. Not too long after that, the wife passed away and the husband moved to a senior home. Their children came back to manage the funeral. I chose this house because I know this story well, and this is a fairly common one, though nonetheless touching. The image for the blueprint was taken from the angle at which you'd see the house from the street. I remember this story especially well because this was a couple of years ago at this point, but it was kind of the first time that it struck me how bittersweet the passage of time is. I wish I could have gotten some close ups of the house, but it was recently sold to a new owner, and I wasn't sure if they were home or not. I decided it was better to not take the chance and seem like a total creep.
